Archetypal Images from Experiences of Psychiatric Patients with Special Reference to their Eexperiences of the Light

Abstract
The experience of light by 11 psychiatric patients was presented and discussed: in several aspects from the viewpoint of analytical psychology. It was assumed that patient¢¥s previous knowledge about mystic experiences of sages or common people during mass ceremonials of the church might have been determined patient¢¥s readiness to.experience the light in mythical way, for 9 from 11 patients were either Christian or under Christian influence through their family members. However, the extremely archaic elements in their experience of light, , were far beyond their conscious expectations and no differences could be seen between patient¢¥s experience of- light and the religious mystic experience in its intensity and its effect. The only difference would be the lackness of introspecting attitude toward the inner light by our patients which can be found among hermetics, yogi, taoist .and in Buddhistic meditation. Some patients had percieved the strange illumination as omen of the worldly catastrophe and for some patients the perception of the light was related to an ecstatic feeling of love and joy. Exposing by the light most patients felt an expansion of self which apparently. indicates the inflation of ego by archetype of self in terms of analytical psychology. How-ever, few patient had perceived the light as powerful destructive radiation which was supposed to come from the unknown scientists. From this we can suppose the double aspects of light and also the shadow of self archetype. Most patients had been suffered from either paranoid schizophrenia or affective and schizoaffective disorders. There was no evidence that the nature of illness itself gave any direct influence upon the positive or the negative experience of the light.
